My Shadow...

I stood alone in the empty room. It was dark so I felt with my hands along the walls and found a switch. I flipped the toggle and a light from above the switch illuminated the room and cast my shadow upon the opposite wall. At first the shadow seemed to fall from a giant, but as I walked close it shrank until it was my very same size. While studying the silhouette I lost my balance and fell forward through the shadow and through the wall.

I fell and kept falling until I realized it was no longer necessary. Upon stopping I called for help and then failed at finding a perimeter in any direction. I heard a noise from above and saw the ground below . Suddenly a giant foot came slamming down, narrowly missing me. The foot morphed into an elephant that tried to ensnare me with its enormous trunk. I dodged the attempt and it reared up and let out a deafening snort. I plugged my ears and recoiled. The clamor faded to heavy breathing.

I looked back and noticed a large muscular bull where the elephant had previously been. It was pivoting its head from side to side and stamping its thick hoof upon the ground. It began its thunderous charge towards me, the ground shaking in its wake. As it approached it lowered its horns to gored me, but I turned to the side; the horns snagging my shirt, tearing it off and throwing me to the ground.

Scrambling to my feet my frantic eyes fell upon the timid frame of lamb pulling its head out from my torn shirt. Drawn by its facade of innocence, I approached this animal as it pranced around and murmured its staccato complaint. I was about to comfort it with a stroke through the wool when the complaint turned into a growl and the lamb into a wolf.

I pulled my hand away missing the snapping bite from the wolf. The jaws took hold of my pants and with a violent shake, threw me from them. I quickly ran away, yet the wolf, with fangs exposed and frothing at the mouth, was in pursuit. When my legs felt as though they'd carry me no longer, I turned to see the ravenous canine lunge into a leap. Shocked, I tumbled upon the ground, loosing my shoes in the process, and the animal sailed over me.

I heard no sound of paws on ground and rose to my feet. The wolf was no where to be seen. I heard a screech and turned in its direction to find a large eagle, with outstretched claws, swooping down upon me. I collapsed in fear, losing only a little hair to the clutches of this predatory bird.

As it came back for a second attempt, its body and broad wingspan transformed in mid air into a snake and fell to the ground beside my feet in a hissing heap. As its quick tongue darted about, it slithered itself around me. It tightened the coil and I fell upon my knees. I tried to escape its hold and wrapped my hands around its long neck to strangle its life away. But the scales became slimy and the serpent became a writhing fish.

Whipping me with its fins and tail, it sliced into my hands causing me to toss it down with hopes of it suffocating in the open air. I used my socks to dress my wounds then brought my attention back to this abomination. As though it wanted to inflict further damage upon me, it flopped frantically in my direction. I watched in pity as the random quivering came to an end, but was once again astonished to see it shrink into the form of an earthworm.

This repulsive nightcrawler squirmed its way towards my feet. When it reached me it started to flop its tiny head against my toes. With great contempt and a hardened heart I crushed it underfoot. I crouched down to analyze the mystical slime, surely to be remaining, but only saw my own shadow cast upon the floor.
